Jugs and Pitchers

from 22.00

Collected under this heading are series of quartinos, sangria pitchers, poetry jugs and general pouring vessels. Each is wheel thrown and decorated by hand, using earthenware clay (red or white), naturally-mixed slips, and foodsafe glazes.
The harmony of making these vessels is expressed by their simplicity. A humble object to enlighten your table, they are subtle accent pieces and can also be used as flower vases, pencil jugs, etc.
The series of vessels bearing poems are made in collaboration with writer and poet Sharon Bentley. Selected phrases from classic poems, samples of original works, and sometimes even her handwriting are drawn into the clay. This immediate expression of writing and drawing into the earth, is timeless, and connects us all to the continuum of artist, potter, writer, and collector.
The forms are inspired by the utility of the form, including a spout and method of holding. Some are flasks, the ancient ware of pilgrims. Others are slipware, painted with decorative colors made from clay itself. Heavy use of sgraffito technique, scratching and carving through the layers to create gentle texture and reveal the underlying clay color.
Serving vessels are all about giving, and these make great gifts!
